Environmental Control Checklist

One of the first (and most basic) steps to take once identifying an allergy is to take control of your environment to avoid contact with the allergen as much as possible.

At Home
  • Create An "Allergy-Safe Room": This should be a room where you spend a large portion of your time. To make this room "Allergy-Safe" remove carpets, remove heavy draperies and fabric covered furniture, place a correctly sized air filter, and use hypo-allergenic covers on pillows and mattresses.
  • Avoid Feather or Wool Bedding: Dust mites tend to infest those materials. Also be sure to use hypo-allergenic covers for all pillows and mattresses.
  • Avoid Clutter and Dust-Collecting Knickknacks: Books, toys, and other objects on shelves can be very hard to keep clean.
  • Keep Floors Bare or Use Washable Area Rugs (Avoid Carpet)
  • Use Air Filters: Air filters keep the air clean and free of allergens, just be sure to pick one that is the correct size for each room.
  • Keep Indoor Humidity Between 48-52%
  • Put Filters Over Forced-Air Heating Vents
  • Keep Rain Gutters Clear
  • Clean Up Water Spills and Repair Leaks Quickly
  • Avoid Yard Work In The Early Morning
  • Clean Your Car Regularly
At Work
  • Keep Your Work Space Uncluttered
  • Dust Your Work Space Regularly
  • Do Not Decorate With Dried Plants or Flowers
