Things to Consider

Should I get one or two hearing aids?

Two hearing aids generally:
  • Provide more "natural" hearing
  • Make the listener more relaxed
  • Help in localizing where sounds come from
  • Create more balance in hearing
  • Allow for better listening in noise
However, if an individual's lifestyle is not such that two aids are necessary, one hearing aid may be the better choice.

What size/style hearing aid will I need?

Hearing aids come in various sizes or styles: in-the-ear, in-the-canal, completely-in-the-canal, and behind-the-ear, including open fit BTE. Based on the degree of hearing loss and the patient's hearing needs, the appropriate style of hearing aids can be determined. Not all styles are compatible with all hearing losses.

How sophisticated will my hearing aids be?

Almost all hearing aids today are digital and are set to the user's hearing needs using computer programming. Special features are available to help with listening in noise, hearing over the telephone, and for other specific situations. The necessary features will be determined based on the user's needs. The more advanced and automatic the programming, the more advanced the technology will be.
